Worst illness
« on: April 14, 2008, 08:17:05 PM »
I've noticed that threads seem to die quickly in this part of the forum, ah well. Sorry if my threads are a bit boring lol I just like to hear peoples stories about life. I was just wondering what the worst illness is that you've had and how your experiences were with it. The worst I have had to date was malaria which I got during a visit to Egypt, I had my vaccinations far too late and I believe I was infected when I went to Cairo because on the flight back to the hotel I had lots of mosqutio bites that drove me crazy. It first started with symtpoms similar to dehydration, I would wake up feeling like I was going to be sick every night, but kind of fight it off it and fall to sleep. After a week it really hit me on the 6 hour flight home, I had a burning hot fever on the plane, a thumping headache so painful its hard to imagine, terrible stomach and chest pain and was sweating like I was in a sauna or something. When I got home I drank lots of water and felt fine for the first day, but the next day I started to vomit almost constantly in my back garden at night time, and the colour of it scared me to hell as it was blood red. I didn't want to tell my parents I had something like malaria because they'd think I was just being paranoid. I went to sleep again but woke up, I'd been asleep for all of 2 hours but it felt like I had been asleep for days on end. I stood up and it was almost like when cartoons see double of something after a knock to the head, but probably twice as bad. My hearing was also distorted and I felt like I was twice my actual height, it was weird. It felt like I had a fully grown man on my back though haha I felt so heavy, and I couldn't even go into light because my head hurt so much. I tried to keep quiet about it still until I burst out into enormous sweats and fainted in the front room. I also came out in itchy rashes, had hallucinations and would go into outbursts of crying for no reason. I was rushed to hospital early hours of the morning but don't remember much of it after fainting. I have never been so scared from an illness before and when they told me malaria kills, I seriously freaked out.

Oh I got one! I had surgery about 2 years ago on my lower back, and the stitches were still fresh. The pain meds they gave me had just run out, and my mother-in-law had some oxycontins, so she gave me those until I could get to the pharmacy the next day. I took one of them, not knowing that your body can't tell the difference between that and heroin! Turns out, the first time most people do heroin, they vomit uncontrollably. Couple that with the fact that they had me taking laxitives because the pain pills that they originally had me on caused constipation, and you have one not-so-fun night. I took the oxycontin at around 10pm, and at midnight, I couldn't sleep. Apparently it's an "upper" and not a "downer." At around 2am, my stomach was in knots. It hurt so badly that I could do nothing but writhe in bed and moan. It hurt to try to get up because of the abdominal pain as well as the stitches. Then all of a sudden, I had the urge! The laxitives were definately kicking in, so I ran to the toilet. When I got there, my freakin anus exploded! lol... It was bad... very bad. On top of that, the vomiting started. Refusing to place my head where a massive biohazard had just been released, I flushed the toilet while vomiting all over the floor. Very, very bad. Every time my stomach would wrench, it would stretch the stitches apart. I ended up having to go back to the hospital due to blood loss (the entire bathroom floor was flooded with vomit and blood) and get my 27 stitches replaced.

Nasty, absolutely nasty! I had surgery not long ago as well, about 3-4 months ago for some problems around my stomach area. It was only a 1 night stay but when I coughed the pain was unbearable. I remember sleeping the next night and the pain was pretty intense, and its worse because theres nothing you can do about it when the painkillers don't seem to be working. I've always been quite sickly, I was born prematurely and almost died, so my immune system has never been so great, therefore a lot of the time I have coughs, colds or just viruses, it annoys the hell out of me and the last thing you want after surgery is a cough! Not really an illness but I fell 15 feet and bashed my head when climbing up Saddleworth Moore when I was 12. I've had a hell of a lot of other bad viruses and flu etc but nothing has even came close to comparing with malaria, I really did think that this was it and that I was going to die. When I hit my head I lost all senses obviously, but I saw static and lots of it, almost like looking at a TV with no signal, and I heard lots of crackling. Blood was pouring down my head and over my neck, down through my jumper. I had to get down off the moores, my Dad led me down and all I remember was him shouting 'Stay awake!' haha. I had morphine at the hospital because the pain was so intense and I actually had fragments of the stone in the wound, nasty I know.

I have a pretty dam funny thing with laxitives too, when I was about 9 or 10 I went camping with my Dad and I ate a block of fruit cubes, not knowing what they were or what they did. It sent my stomach so bad it felt like I had butterflies in my stomach x50 or something lmao. The rest of it you really don't want to hear it's pretty gross.

I almost died when i was born too.  I was born with Spina Bifida and my spinal cord was outside of my spine.  They fixed me up though.  Luckily Im fine now, but the doctors said I would never be able to walk or control my bowel movements.

SARS? Holy crap! That's pretty dam nasty too.  :o Interesting stories people, keep them coming! I'm sure I can think of a lot more over time, I generally tend to try and avoid thinking about this sort of stuff haha. Other problems that I have besides an illness is a heart defect which my doctor suspects I got off my Dad. My Dad was in the army for 22 years (entered when he was 16!) but had to leave due to heart trouble and I'm petrified I will get it too. I can't do sport or any other activities like that because my heart races and won't settle for hours, it will also skip/jump beats and flutter rapidly. It's very scary and it also leaves me short of breath, it is also enormously increased when I drink alcohol which really sucks as I have to be really careful with how much I drink. When I lie down on my back it also skips and jumps until I sit up, and I also get sharp pains in my chest with it, rarely, but it happens and its dam frightening. Theres been plenty of times when I've been sat on Halo and it's jumped a beat or 2 or stopped beating for half a second, and I've stood up trying to breath, I generally go into the bathroom to calm down. I know it could one day turn serious, my Dad was in military hospital for weeks having daily tests and he said it was just as frightening as fighting the war! (he fought in both Ireland and the Gulf, I think)  ??? Scary stuff though.
