Halo 3 mental game woes.
« on: April 21, 2008, 07:23:01 PM »
i need to improve my mental game ne thoughts?
I realized my mental game sucked (especially in clutch situations) last Saturday. There was a halo 3 2v2 tourney at my local mall: 10 per person to enter, dbl elim, best two out of 3, all team slayer on Guardian, Construct, Pit, Narrows and Iso.
There were 16 teams there.
The first game i was so freakin nervous, i sucked so bad!! we lost in the third match 25-20. Now we were in the losers bracket. The next two series i managed to calm myself down (my teammate had a good mental game, the whole time) we thrashed our oppontents winning in the series with them in the first two matches (our scores were like 25-7, 25-10 25-12, 25-6)

So at this point in time our record is 2-1. we are still in it. The next team we faced got dominated on Narrows 25-14, then we played the Pit and lost 25-19. and in the tie breaker match we lost a horrible 25-10.

Overall we placed 6th out of 16 teams. I know we were just as good as the top two teams, and i feel like i let my teammate down with my crappy mental game. Please help so i wont screw him over again!!

P.S. the winning team walked away with about $200 USD and only paid $10 USD each to enter.

Don't worry about it man, your certainly not alone. Nerves throw me off constantly, certainly when it comes to my aim. Any advice that you get would almost certainly help me. It would be ironic of me to give you advice seen as we share the same problem. Every game matters to me and I feel as if I am expected to play brilliantly throughout, this makes me concentrate more but freak out whenever I get attacked, which can often lead me to dying.

I know that my skill in no way constitutes worthiness to give advice to any of you guys, but if you look at my past games, you'll notice that I don't die a lot. To me, not giving the other team kills is just as important as getting them. Who cares if you have 16 kills if you also have 27 deaths. At the risk of sounding cowardly, I'll let you in on my secret. If I think I'm gonna die, either because I'm outnumbered or I know that they've put more shots into me than I have into them, I'll retreat to a safer location. I don't mean run and hide, but I do mean get out of sight and give your sheilds a change to recharge and reload your weapon. Chances are, when you pop back out, you can pop 'em with a grenade and weaken them, or someone else has already engaged them, so you can team kill them. I've heard a lot of people comment on my "ability" to not die, and although I may not post as many kills as everyone else, it's almost a sure bet that I gave less kills away. I mean, think about it; All those times that your team loses by 15 or less kills - If each person on your team had died 4 less times per match, you would have been in the lead.

I'm not saying by any means that you should "play to not die." Obviously, being aggressive is key. But, being able to be aggresive while also being able to show restraint when you know you can't come out on top is the key to playing clutch.

yeah i have seen them. Some of there hiding spots are impressive (iso and valhala) others the only reason they got away with hiding was cuz the people they played were newbs.

I guess what I mean is...... I dunno, lol, but watch Legend in his guide (I know you got it ;D ) and you'll see what I mean. He has a way of ducking into cover for just a second, and the popping back out and getting the kill. I haven't quite mastered the getting the kill part, lol, but I'm usually able to at least get the assist out of it.
