Urban exploration - wow!
« on: April 26, 2008, 06:39:03 PM »
Hey guys, sorry with all the thread starting lately, just like to keep this place alive, and of course, hear of all your experiences, interests whatever. I have been exploring places since a young age, I know of abandoned bomb shelters, Roman Caves, tunnels, you name it in my local area, but nothing could have prepared me for what I visited today, which was a very surreal experience.

I've been doing some research on an abandoned RAF Base in Croft, a village just outside of my local area for a long while now. This place is perhaps the most incredibly well preserved historic sites I have ever seen, and I wasn't prepared for it in the slightest. It's very hard to find, in the middle of the countryside and behind an enormous, rusted iron gate. Anyway, me and my friend (Elle, 15), find a way around it and head through a wooded area which looks like the beginning of a horror film. We see an enormous building, 4 stories high, at least 150 metres wide and derelict and decaying, surrounded by overgrown grass. What can I say? Very dark inside, chilling and haunting, it had original light fittings, RUNNING water and taps! It had a basement, cellar, a morgue (yes, thats right!) and you will not believe this, a car and motorcycle in from at least 1939. It also had an abandoned indoor theater stage, cash registers, and medical equipment such as bottles from 1941. It had the original signs painted on to the walls such as Cantene, Operating Theater, Hangar (for the aircraft), and countless anti-Nazi slogans carved into the wall, including one I will not forget, 'Hitlerism is the devil'. It even had original seating inside such as leather chairs. It was literally as if they had took up and left the day before, it was so undisturbed and you could not believe this was now over 60 years ago. My friend clung to me throughout the explore, she was terrified out of her wits and spent half of her time hiding behind me, and when we went down into the morgue we had no idea until it was too late, she went as white as a ghost hahaha. I was extremely frightened myself, and anyone who has seen the film 'I Am Legend' will be familiar with the scene where Will first encounters the infected humans inside the derelict building, well believe me, nothing could be so similar to my experience today and I was pretty dam petrified. Being a collector of historical relics you can imagine how tempting it was to say 'Bring the car and grab the loot!' but I had an enormous respect for the site and left it perfectly how it has remained for 60 years. Was quite an emotional journey to think that hundreds of men who were stationed there likely lost their lives during the counter offensives to the Blitz. There is also a large and impressive underground section to it, comprimising of many chambers, tunnels and fire/escape routes, the room is dotted with fire exit signs and coat hangers, old shoes, etc. After I explored the building, I went to explore the runways outside where the aircraft would have once landed and departed, it's an extremely eerie place, not for the faint of heart I don't think. My friend filmed it with her camera, a 5 minute long video, I hope to get it on YouTube so maybe I can link you guys up, but beware, contains strong and repetitive use of the F word and plenty of 'oh my god, no way!' hehe.

That's awesome! Please, get it up on youtube! I would LOVE to see it! We just don't have things like that where I live. Sure, we have old storefronts and houses, but nothing to that effect. And even the sites here in the States that would be considered a historical site such as the one you just spoke of are turned into a museum of sorts. It completely takes away from the historical value of the site. Just once, I'd like to walk into an abandoned fort or something and see someones fingerprints still on a glass from when it was left in the first place. I've heard that the tunnels at Iwo Jima are just like your hidden bunker. That they found hairbrushes, shaving mirrors and razors, plates, bowls, etc. in exactly the same positions that they were left in 60 years ago.

Woowww... WHAT A DAY, and I thought the first explore couldn't be any more exciting. Today we got more than we bargained for when we made another visit to RAF Croft. Me and a friend explored it even more today, looking through the old theater, I can't even begin to explain how incredible it is, I could go on all night, so I'll get down to the big event of the day.

After our amazing and throrough explore, we decided to leave. On our way out, we hear a dam loud bark which made us run for cover immediately. Me and my friend hide in one of the derelict rooms full of old cupboards, all the windows were smashed out, the walls were all stained, damp and flaking, it was your typical horror film setting. My heart was in my throat, I can hear footsteps now outside rustling in the grass, me and my friend are crouched down, back to the wall in the shadows breathing so slowly and not even daring to budge an inch. I've never paniced like it. There was a small rusted pipe in the wall, I peer through and see a man walking around in a purple and green raincoat with a scary looking dog. It was the farmer from next door and we presumed this was his land, and he was pissed off. I had my hands raised and was ready to give myself up, then we hear him come into the building and can hear shuffling getting nearer in the darkness. Then it stops. My friend whispers slowly to me to make a runner and not look back, she starts creeping across the room to the main hangar, its incredible what you will imagine made a loud noise when in reality it was second to silent. While I'm going into a silent hysterical fit pointing at the ground and giving hand gestures hinting 'GET YOUR ******* ASS BACK HERE NOW!'
haha, she reaches the corridor. So I started to creep myself slowly towards her, were in the main corridor now tiptoeing to the exit which is seconds away, but they went like minutes. We literally reach the exit and as we do there is an enormous crash behind us, I've not crapped myself so much in a LONG time! We ran SO fast and my heart really felt like it was a bomb in my chest! Took a good time before my heart calmed down but I was shaking badly even an hour after we escaped.

We know the farmer knew we were there - how? Footprints in the mud. It was very rainy today and he must have saw them, there were 4 of us there but only me and my friend were the ones caught in the middle of the chaos. We left immediately, getting into my friends car and he drove away. 15 minutes up the road a cop car is coming exactly the same direction with flashing lights. My friend, like an idiot flawed it in a panic and we ended up doing at least 100mph down a narrow, bending country lane. We soon got on the motorway but my friend Loz called it an epic escape, heheh.

WARNING! LARGE IMAGES

Here we go people, as promised. Visited once more yesterday, this time again with only 1 friend. It was extremely windy, so the wind wasn't half howling and echoeing down the dark corridors. I was shaking like a leaf haha. The old rooftop was rattling, banging and it sounded like something running up behind me, was very scary so you better thank me for the crap I went through to get these! lol  ;D Enjoy. There are MANY more photos to be uploaded. I also have a film that is awaiting to be uploaded on YouTube so please be patient.  :) The place might initially look quite lit up, but believe you me, it is extremely dark, many photos were taken with an extremely bright flash as it was far too dark to capture any images.

The main entrance gate to the base.

The barracks to the left hand side, and the toilet area to the right.

The steps leading to the morgue.

The morgue itself...

An old fire point/exit.

The central chambers of the base, presumed to be kitchens to the left with evidence of stables further up on the right.

The theater from the outside.

Inside the back of the theater. Note the ladders, only spotted them when I returned home...

Once accessible upper floor to the theater. I plan on making a fourth visit to try and find a way up.

Other useless electronics, lol.

War time vandalism.
