Hey guys, sorry with all the thread starting lately, just like to keep this place alive, and of course, hear of all your experiences, interests whatever. I have been exploring places since a young age, I know of abandoned bomb shelters, Roman Caves, tunnels, you name it in my local area, but nothing could have prepared me for what I visited today, which was a very surreal experience.
I've been doing some research on an abandoned RAF Base in Croft, a village just outside of my local area for a long while now. This place is perhaps the most incredibly well preserved historic sites I have ever seen, and I wasn't prepared for it in the slightest. It's very hard to find, in the middle of the countryside and behind an enormous, rusted iron gate. Anyway, me and my friend (Elle, 15), find a way around it and head through a wooded area which looks like the beginning of a horror film. We see an enormous building, 4 stories high, at least 150 metres wide and derelict and decaying, surrounded by overgrown grass. What can I say? Very dark inside, chilling and haunting, it had original light fittings, RUNNING water and taps! It had a basement, cellar, a morgue (yes, thats right!) and you will not believe this, a car and motorcycle in from at least 1939. It also had an abandoned indoor theater stage, cash registers, and medical equipment such as bottles from 1941. It had the original signs painted on to the walls such as Cantene, Operating Theater, Hangar (for the aircraft), and countless anti-Nazi slogans carved into the wall, including one I will not forget, 'Hitlerism is the devil'. It even had original seating inside such as leather chairs. It was literally as if they had took up and left the day before, it was so undisturbed and you could not believe this was now over 60 years ago. My friend clung to me throughout the explore, she was terrified out of her wits and spent half of her time hiding behind me, and when we went down into the morgue we had no idea until it was too late, she went as white as a ghost hahaha. I was extremely frightened myself, and anyone who has seen the film 'I Am Legend' will be familiar with the scene where Will first encounters the infected humans inside the derelict building, well believe me, nothing could be so similar to my experience today and I was pretty dam petrified. Being a collector of historical relics you can imagine how tempting it was to say 'Bring the car and grab the loot!' but I had an enormous respect for the site and left it perfectly how it has remained for 60 years. Was quite an emotional journey to think that hundreds of men who were stationed there likely lost their lives during the counter offensives to the Blitz. There is also a large and impressive underground section to it, comprimising of many chambers, tunnels and fire/escape routes, the room is dotted with fire exit signs and coat hangers, old shoes, etc. After I explored the building, I went to explore the runways outside where the aircraft would have once landed and departed, it's an extremely eerie place, not for the faint of heart I don't think. My friend filmed it with her camera, a 5 minute long video, I hope to get it on YouTube so maybe I can link you guys up, but beware, contains strong and repetitive use of the F word and plenty of 'oh my god, no way!' hehe.
