ESPN MLG Halo 3 Pro Interview - Shockwave

One of the best Halo 3 players on the planet answered questions from Halo players all over the US. Check it out!

Andrew Richmond, VA: How long did it take you to get Carbon to really work together as a team and use strategies effectively?

SportsNation Shockwave: We came together right off the bat. The key with a successful team is often instand chemistry, and that is what happened to us. We came together and started beating top-ranked online teams right away. So first you need to see if you have that chemistry and then you can start working on strategy.

CJ Ely: Bethany, Oklahoma: How many hours a day do you practice?

SportsNation Shockwave: As a team, normally 2-3 hours every two days. I usually play two to three hours with the team. But we went two hours a day as a team to get ready for the circut. Closer to tournament time we up the time to four to five hours a day.

Justin Ar-Rasheed: How hard is it adjusting to Halo 3

SportsNation Shockwave: Well I do not find it too difficult. I the most important thing is to look at it as a totally new game. I have switched games alot in my career, so I am used to adapting to games. So you have to go in with the mentality that this is something completely different and that will help you adjust.

Brian Joyner, NC: How do you feel about the 08 season, and what teams do you think stand out?

SportsNation Shockwave: I am really excited about 08. MLG just announced the schedule, and I am very excited to get to alot of these cities and I am very excited to see who will be good. But there are so many great teams, and you do not want to go into the tournaments underestimating any teams. And there are going to be a lot of new teams that are probably going to make some noise, which we have never seen. So it will be a very difficult to get used to these new teams.

Colin (Hartford, CT):: What approach do you take to improve your gameplay, and how would you advise up and comers to improve their play?

SportsNation Shockwave: When I work on game play it is usually one aspect at a time. One of my weaker points was my sniper skills, and I really worked on that with Halo 3, but I got worse with the rifle as a result. So I try to work one at a time. I work with one weapon from week to week. So I will do one week where I just use grenades, and see how they work and land, and every aspect of their use. To up and comers, I think the key is just playing and focus on one thing you really want to get good at, and try new things and see what works and what does not work. Analyze your game; go back and look at your games and see what works and go from there.

jonathan, new york: are u guys going to make roster changes if it doesnt work out for the first 2 tournaments

SportsNation Shockwave: I do not want to promote any changes or rumors. But if we are not playing well we may have to make some business decisions. I mean I do not want to start any rumors, and I do not see any changes being made, but it is a possibility. You can never count those things out, if we are not performing the way we want to perform.

Kyle, NY: How did you come up with having the gamertag "Shockwave"?

SportsNation Shockwave: It was a while ago in '04. If I rememeber right there was a Counterstrike team named Shockwave back in the day and I needed a new name, and I remembered that name because I really liked it for Halo. So I kind of just took it and started using it.

Nathan (Ankeny, Iowa): I have allot of trouble with keeping teams together and meeting new ppl for a team. do u have any advice on geting a team with ppl dont realy know?

SportsNation Shockwave: Well of course it is hard, because you do not really know these people. My suggestion would be find people in the MLG forums in the yellow pages and team finder pages. A lot of those people in there are very dedicated and looking for dedicated teammates. I think if you went there you will be able to find a lot of dedicated people. Also go to events, because it will allow you to meet more people.

Corey Richmond, VA: What would you say is the best way to approach developing strategies for maps with a team?

SportsNation Shockwave: Get the team together and wotk on strategies on a map. Bounce ideas off each other and show people what you want to do on the map. That is my best suggestion. It may take a few hours to get it right, but solidify a startegy by suggesting and debating approaches to the map.

SportsNation Shockwave: Thanks to all the fans and to MLG for everything they have done for me the last few years! I appreciate all the support I receive from everyone at Va. Tech and back home !

Battle Rifle Aiming Tips: What a lot of people don't realize also is that you have to lead shots in halo 3, from all distances. When ever your opponent strafes to the left you should aim your reticule leading slightly to the left as well ( in the direction the player is moving) but not to the extent that your reticule is no longer red. Same thing goes for all forms of movement. When a player is jumping and is not yet at the peak of their jump lead slightly above them ( aimer still red tho) cuz thats where they are going, up. same thing for when they are falling. When someone is running away aim slightly above the head. All the pros do it. You should also aim slightly below the head because the spread is weird and it will go up anyways. Bottom line is, H3 BR requires a lot of **** to get used to due to weird hit boxes, spread and leading shots. (contributed by: Bullet_Magnet360, added February 7, 2008)

From my experience it's all about outstrafing the opponent. Not only does this make you much harder to hit, if you aim by using your left stick rather than the right, it makes shots much more accurate. (contributed by: ikmarti, added February 7, 2008)

Halo 3 map callouts for Guardian, Narrows, The Pit, and Construct! The top Halo 3 players will say the same thing. To be a great team, you must communicate and knowing certain locations by name is key. They are called map callouts kids! A big thanks to Stray Shot. (added February 1, 2008)

Dave Ellis - Halo 3 Player

Gamertag: GV David
Website: www.gamevideos.com
Look sensitivity: 6
Button Layout: Default
Stick Layout: Default (No Vibration)
Favorite "two hand" weapon: Spartan Laser
Favorite dual-wield combo: Spiker and Mauler

Dave Ellis' Halo 3 Multiplayer Tips:

  • Don't be afraid to drop a grenade at your feet when you die. You'll often take your killer out with you.
  • Learn to glance at your radar with your peripheral vision. Situational awareneness is important.
  • It may sound obvious, but always go for upper torso/headshots. They do more damage.
  • If you and an enemy are face-to-face and shooting each other, jump directly over him. While in the air, look down and melee. Most of the time you'll get an assassination for you ninja efforts.
  • When using the shotgun in close quarters, always melee after firing the shotgun at your target.
  • On Narrows, have your best sniper stand at the back of the map. Even if he doesn't kill everyone coming across the middle, he can call out enemy movements to the team.
  • On Isolation, hold the rockets and ghost. It's difficult for a team to coordinate when someone is ramming into them every 10 seconds.
  • On The Pit, if you have a good sniper to cover you from the opposing team's sniper, drop a regenerator by your turret. You'll be almost invincible on the turret and can easily take out several enemies by yourself.
  • On Snowbound, control either the laser of sniper and the shotgun pit. If you have the laser, have someone on your team grab the ghost, as it's very effective on the map because the snowmounds provide ample cover from small-arms fire.

Victor "LiL Poison" De Leon III - Halo 3 Pro Player

Gamertag: LiL Poison
Website: www.lilpoison.com
Look sensitivity: 3
Button Layout: Green Thumb
Stick Layout: Default
Favorite "two hand" weapon: Sniper Rifle
Favorite dual-wield combo: Maulers or pistols (yes, thos pistols...the human ones)

De Leon's Halo 3 Multiplayer Tips:

  • Don't rush
  • Wait until the other team is down before you grab their flag.
  • To get the other team mad, just teabag them.
  • On The Pit, try to get at least two of your team members to rush for rockets. Rockets are important on that map as well as snipers. One rush for snipes, two for rockets, and the third person for camo.

Improve Your Objective Game: Studying Legit's Game Play - I'll say it again. If you really want to get better you have to watch the best players in the world. This article from MLG does just that. Mason Cobb - MLG Halo 3 Pro Player

Gamertag: Neighbor
Website: www.mlgpro.com
Look sensitivity: 4
Button Layout: Default
Stick Layout: Default (No Vibration)
Favorite "two hand" weapon: Sniper Rifle
Favorite dual-wield combo: Maulers

Mason Cobb's Halo 3 Multiplayer Tips:

  • Make sure you communicate with your teammates during the games (i.e. calling out positions of other opponents, timing power weapons).Try not to get mad during online play-it makes you play worse.
  • Practice your battle rifle.
  • Try to predict your opponents' movements. If you can think a step or two ahead of them, you have the advantage.
  • If you lose a game, try and analyze what you did well and what went wrong. This is the best way to improve.
  • In Guardian Team Slayer, I like to have three of my teammates at the sniper tower. One of the guys is on the ramp that goes down to the trees (this guy is watching under the glass), another guy at the bubble shield spawn just camping there waiting for people to pop out near the camouflage spawn. The other two teammates are just running around the snipe tower grabbing the overshield or using the sniper.

Tommy "Tsquared" Taylor - MLG Halo 3 Pro Player

Gamertag: ItsT2forRealz
Website: www.myspace.com/mlgtsquared
Look sensitivity: 4
Button Layout: Default
Stick Layout: Default
Favorite "two hand" weapon: Sniper Rifle or Energy Sword
Favorite dual-wield combo: Maulers

Tsquared Halo 3 Multiplayer Tips:

  • Communicate with your teammates is key. Be sure to run around the map and create names for parts of the map that are hard to call out.
  • Try to aim for having complete map control. What this means is: a) have control of the power weapons. b) higher ground and positioning-it's much harder to win a battle when you're looking up compared to looking down. c) have your teammates watching all of the flanks.Once this is accomplished and the lead is established, don't leave your setup. Be sure to make the other team come to you, and it's a sure victory.
  • The bubble shield is clutch when it comes to Oddball, whether it is a team or free-for-all game. Try focusing on getting control of the shield and wait for the opportunity. If you can get a set up with the ball inside of the bubble shield, there will be hardly anything the opponents can do.
  • Sniping in Halo 3 in completely different to Halo 2. If anything, it's much more simialr to the Halo 1 way of sniping. Instead of using the autoaim, take you time and line up your shot-even lead it for farther distances.

Sniper Target Practice! - In Last Resort, if you can manage to get all the way on top of the covered bridge near the beach, you may even be able to view it from the ghost/warthog on the beach, i havent checked from there though.. Looking at the beach all the way to the left above the closest island to land there will be about four or five birds that regenerate when you shoot them, and they move in various directions making the sniping more challenging. Halo 3 Multiplayer Tips and Strategies by Dude!

  • If someone starts shooting at you from behind, dont try to retreat. look at your radar and jump backwards over them and attempt an assassination, at the least it will disorientate them.
  • Try to get close for a beat down, but if you dont know the range for it you will be killed. you can beatdown from a farther distance than you may think.
  • An overshield will not protect you from a shotgun or sniper headshot.
  • Don't prefer players because they have a high rank. I can play 1,000 matches and do absolutely nothing and win 500 of them. Vice Versa, avoid players that really dont do anything regardless of their rank.
  • Don't teabag. its a waste of time and will be pretty embarassing to see that on your enemy MVP report has 24 out of 25 kills on you.
  • If you just got whooped in a battle, look at the other teams MVP (Person with the most kills) in the replay section, embed their skills and tactics into your own play.
  • in elim snipers/shotty snipers... NEVER stand still! You're likely to be the first one to fall. if you have horrible aim, try hiding in a coridore with your pistol/shotgun.
  • Although you would like to mooch that kill off your team-mate by letting the enemy kill him then have yourself finish him off, don't. It's an easy way to give them 10 extra kills that could of been avoided.

Crouch To Avoid Radar – A Basic Halo 3 Tip - Something any Halo 3 noob needs to know! (added November 14, 2007)

Mini Experience Point FAQ:

Q: How exactly does EXP increase?

A: If you are in the top 49% of any hopper game, ranked or unranked, you will get XP. If there are 16 people you just need to be number 8 or higher.

Q: How do you gain EXP the fastest?

A: Play in all the hoppers, ranked and unranked. Even unranked hoppers have an invisible “skill” to keep you from picking on newbs. If you spread out your gaming you can get XP from the lower levels of all hoppers.

Q: On Solo Slayer, is it based on getting in top X place?

A: Top 49%

Q: Does Ranked VS Matchmaking make any difference in gaining EXP?

A: No, but at the higher officer levels you need to have corresponding skill levels to “rank” up. Otherwise you could have a 2000 XP, but since you’re below 10 in highest skill you might be some lieutenant still or something.

Q: How do I increase my experience points?

A: You place 3rd in individual or your team wins.

Q: On Team Slayer (and other team games), it is based only on team wins?

A: Yes

Q: On Solo Slayer, is it based on getting in top X place?

A: Top 3

Q: Does Ranked VS Matchmaking make any difference in gaining EXP?

A: No

Some tips are worth reading 10 times. I would think the Bungie employees would be people worth listening to. So, read this! Think long and hard about what George Cheng has to say. Short in words, but important words spoken.

What are the tricks to being really good in Halo 3 Multiplayer?

Map awareness and aim are the most important factors. Make a conscious and concerted effort to think about where the weapons are and where the traffic patterns are.

LOOK where people are likely to be instead of where you are going. If the means you’re always running sideways and backwards then so be it.

AIM where people might appear, if you’re heading up a ramp you shouldn’t be aiming at the ramp. Aim chest-level at edge of the doorway at the top of the ramp where someone might appear.

When you see someone on your radar try to picture where they could be on the map. This will help you get them jump on them, or even surprise them with an around-the-corner grendade.

Zoom Cancelling - Rather than double clicking the analog stick to get through the sniper rifle's two levels of zoom, just double tap Y. This will tell the game that you quickly switched weapons and then switched back, but all you'll see is your sniper rifle. You can also HOLD DOWN the analog stick. This will make your zoom go back one level. So, if your on X10 zoom, HOLD DOWN the analog stick and you'll go back to X5. Do the same again and you'll be back to normal view. Simple. This can make all the difference in getting out of zoom in a hurry. (source: MyCheats.com, added November 7, 2007)

Don't run around with the sword out - The sword (or hammer), are powerful weapons. However tempting it might be, do not run around with them equipped. Unless you know that there is an opponent closing in with you, keep a gun out. All too often you will see players who are determined to sword someone run at someone who has a gun, neglecting to realize that they are 100 ft. away and have no chance. Remember, the sword is a close combat weapon. (source: MyCheats.com, added November 7, 2007)

Position and Location are a Revolution - A great one page article from Halos-Finest.com that you should read, then think about before playing your next Halo 3 multiplayer match. General Halo 3 Multiplayer Strategy Tip: Placing an unneeded vehicle on top of a bomb arming spot or flag spawn can be a real irritant for your opponents; you can also park them in front of control panels (such as those found on High Ground and Last Resort). Sometimes, enemies will accidentally climb inside the vehicle rather than grabbing the flag, or may decide to quickly move the obstruction aside. Anything that slows them down gives your team the opportunity to launch a more concerted defensive strike. (added November 5, 2007)

In Sandtrap, High Ground, and Isolation get the ghost! The ghost is very effective and you should be able to pile up kills very rapidly. If you find yourself being chased by a ghost don’t try to be tough and shoot it out! Find cover and wait for the ghost to approach you. The brute shot is a great weapon (it can be found very easily) to combat the ghost. Also keep in mind, you can melee someone who is on a ghost. If you do this they will die in a single blow!
